benefits of self publishing

You may be considering releasing you next book and need help deciding if self-publishing is the right option for you. Below I have outlined some of the unique benefits of self publishing as a more modern method that is becoming increasingly more popular among upcoming authors or entrepereneurs looking to build a great brand through content.

  • Speed & Efficiency: Self-Publishing is a lot faster and efficient compared to traditional publishing methods. If you are looking to have your book released at a certain ideal date then self publishing is the best option for you. Traditional publishers, on the other hand, have more complex decision making processes that would take longer, and you would not be sure if your book will be accepted.
  • More Choice & Control: With self publishing you maintain more control over the whole process from your books appearance and content to how it is distributed and marketed. This control also allows for more creative options to choose from including digital self-publishing through ebooks. But before self-publishing, make sure you have a plan.
  • More Rights and Ownership: You also have more rights to your own work compared to traditional publishing which gives the publisher more rights and ownership of your work. Your book is your art and you should maintain your ownership of it or traditional publishers will make a huge profit off it and you will receive only a tiny fraction.
  • More Royalties: With self publishing you receive more royalties than traditional publishing methods. Average traditional publishers pay 25% in ebook royalties and 8-7% for paperback, plus the traditional publishing agent can receive up to 15% of profits. But with a self-publisher like Kindle Direct Publishing(KDP) you can receive the 35% royalty option or the 70% royalty option for your ebook.
  • Longer Shelf-Life: Your book gets a longer shelf-life compared to traditional publishers who are constantly replacing their inventory with new books that may be more popular or interesting. With self-publishing you can also still compete with traditional publishers through expanded distribution programs.
  • More Income Streams: Multiple self-publishing outlets also allow for multiple streams of income from KDP to Ingram Spark, Apple Ibooks, etc. Aggregators also allow you to upload your book to one platform and distribute it to multiple channels at your own convenience.
